Removing Kohler Alterna Handles – and Do it for Less

t6904-2-cp.jpg We sell a lot of Kohler replacement handles, and by far we sell the Most Kohler Alterna replacement handles. Are most popular questions are: How do I know if I have the large or small handles ?   And, How do I remove the handles from the valve?

First, there are 2 square handle sizes – the large square handles measure 2.5″ across and the small square handles measure 2″ across. The large handles fit all widespread lavatory, bath + shower, kitchen and bidet faucets. The small square handles fit the centerset lavatory faucets. The lever handles are only made in one size and are made to work with all faucets except the centerset lavatory faucets.

Next, you must identify which handle style you have: Alterna Cube, Alterna Lever and Post-1997 Alterna Square Handle or Pre-1997 Alterna Square Handle. Below is a short summary of how to remove each Kohler Alterna handle and further below I have shown in greater detail some instruction.

Cube, Lever and Post-1997 Square Handle – Hold on to the handle while turning the skirt counter-clockwise by hand or with a strap wrench, taking care to protect all finish surfaces. Remove any remaining components to expose the valve. Set all parts aside for re-use. The valve can now be replaced or other repairs made. Re-assemble handle parts in reverse order.

Pre-1997 Square Handle – Gently pry off the plug button in the center of the handle using a thin flat blade such as a screwdriver, taking care to protect all finish surfaces. Unscrew the Phillips screw attaching the handle to the valve stem. Gently pull off the handle and any remaining components to expose the valve. Set all parts aside for re-use. The valve can now be replaced or other repairs made. Re-assemble handle parts in reverse order.

I’d like to buy a new, higher arching spout for my Alterna faucet. I also need to repair dripping valves. Can you help me find a spout?
