See The Savings in the Water and on the Toilet

How old is your toilet? If your toilet is older than 15 years old, and most are, by installing a new toilet you can save a lot of green and help the worlds water supply. Up until 1973 most toilets flushed using 5 – 7 gallons of water. In 1974 Kohler introduced the first Wellworth Waterguard toilet that flushed using 3.5 gallons of water per flush. In 1989 The Wellworth Lite was introduced that flushed on 1.5 gallons of water per flush (recognized today as gpf). Not only was the water usage reduced dramatically, 2 gallons per flush, but the toilets needed to be re-engineered to allow them to ‘pull’ the waste out instead of ‘push’ the waste out. Here at the Greenbuild Expo Allen Lyle of dannylipford.com visits the Kohler booth to demonstrate exactly how much water can be saved by using a low-flow toilet in your home.

In Kohler’s booth, they give a great demonstration on how much water a newer toilet saves. Sometimes you have to see it for yourself to believe. If your home was built, let’s say, before 1994, you’ve probably got a toilet that flushes on 3.5 gallons of water per flush. Here you can see it in action. Watch the video below. The big misconception when it came to low-flow toilets, that’s not an easy word to say, is that they were not that effective.

Allen also demonstrates Kohler’s Cimarron model, that he has the very same model in his own home. It is just as effective. This is a 1.28 gallon model. Look at the difference there. You can compare them right there. This is how much water you could save. You’re talking about up to 22,000 gallons of water every year just by making a switch.
